Newspaper: Global Warming

I have read many articles that are written by many foreign editors, American editors. Since I never really read Korean newspaper before, I was wondering what they thought of the world issue of global warming and if korean governors have said or done something for it.

Korean newspaper, "Donga newspaper," is also reporting about the seriousness of melting of Arctic. Underneath the Arctic glaciers, there is significant amount of carbon kept in and the environmentalist suggests that if the global warming continues, the gas would bring out some catastrophies. For the last fifity year, the temperature has increased to 1 celsius overall however if global warming accelerates even faster, the predicting number of increase is 6 celsius. Usually, the Arctic glaciers melt in the Summer but freezed up again in the Winter, however, the melted glacier would not freeze back anymore. The glacier reflects the sunlight but the sea water absorbs the sunling, thus this cycle may urge the other areas to confront the global warming as well. According to the scientists as NASA, it is predicted that from 5 year to 10 years, in the Summer, the Artic may disappear as a whole.

This article is very trust-worthy. It provides a lot of facts and a very few opinions: the article reveals a lot of datas therefore, it is very objective and enable the readers to form their own individual idea on this matter. The melting of the Artic has been dealt with a variety of media and every one of them have similar stories and commonly shared ideas which convinces the readers.

Newspaper: Melting Arctic adds urgency to climate deal

Some say that newspaper articles are not that credible. Unlike other media such as television news, magazines, and radio broadcasting that includes mostly facts, newspaper editiors include a lot of their own viewpoints on a certain matter. They are entitled to criticize or abhor one person or an event that makes the public or readers consider the newspaper articles as a whole as very biase and subjective. However, I personally like reading newspaper article because it is subjective. Reading about someone else's idea and values makes me think for second time towards one thing. It helps me broaden my view and understanding of the world.
This article is mainly discussing the urgency of our environment due to the melting of glacier that adds predominant pressure on global warming. Data shows that the Arctic sea ice may reach its lowest level on record this summer and that the governments need to take immediately action to speed up for new climate pact. This catastrophe could lead to endanger the polar wildlife and accelerate global warming. Some environmentalists and scientists are concerned of just how much warmer the temperatures has become and how dramatically it would change the climate of polar frontier. This article states that a lot of groups want governments of different countries to talk over this problem and quickly.
The article was relatively short compared to the other ones I read. This article lacks details. I believe that the editor could have talked more about some numbers of problems that could emerge if the matter is not handled soon or he could have suggessed some numbers of the thickness of the melting arctic so that the readers can really envision and see better stimulation of this event. However, this article was not biase, it mostly provided facts.

Newspaper: A shift in the Debate Over Global Warming

Global warming is probably the most talked-about and researched-about environmental crisis that is often being said to be just a theory. Our entire world and the nations in it are continuing to excavate more about this world issue and nowadays, the means to slow down the environmental hazard emerges with a number of debates.
The article has been published on the New York Times with a title of, "A shift in the Debate Over Global Warming." This article constitutes and informs about the old ways of which the leaders of the Intergovernment Panel on Climate Change dealt with this issue and the criticism and debating suspicions of how the old ways were not very effective. The old attempt primarily focused on "imposing caps on greenhouse gas emissions to prod energy users to conserve or switch to nonpolluting technologies." (Quoted straight from the website.) However, the recent date has proven it to be inefficient: there has been an unpredictable rise in global emission and a decline in energy efficiency, a growing chorus of economists.
The economist Jeffrey D. Sachs shares his perspective on this matter. He states that our current technology cannot bolster and subsidize a decline in carbon dioxide emissions as well as an expanding global economy. This viewpoint has not only been Sachs' but also agreed by many others. They belive that what is imminently needed is the development of technology that would allow advanced low-carbon technologies. But this cannot be done without significant amount of money. There are those of others who still underscores the importance of capping emissions. Meanwhile, some countries such as China and India are enhancing the economic growth that would most likely help the reduction of carbon emissions.
I personally enjoyed this article a lot. it provided different point of views on the same topic of Global Warming. Thus, it enabled the readers to have fairly objectly and broaden our perspectives by judging different statements.

Streotype: Ji Sun N

Streotype, in my own definition, refers to the act of creating or having a prejudice against a person or even a large group of people; so to speak, labeling others. A widely-used website of Dictonary.com defines this term as ,"a simplified and standardized conception or image invested with special meaning and held in common by members of a group." I have experienced and seen the discrepancies in streotypes for different countries such as Korea and the United States. I have a lot of experieces of being labeled by others for not my own eccentricity but for the general misconceptions that society created towards people who they consider are "my kind of people or association."
In America, I was judged or labeled the most for my race. Most of my American friends consider Asian as "geeky" or "nerdy." They believe that Asian are not very affiliating or socially active thus, do not try to accept them into their groups. Therefore, when my American friends got to know me better they asked, "How come you are so cool? Aren't you suppose to be some kind of bookworm?" They are basically appalled by Asians coming up and talking to them first or being involved in school sports. Some places in the States may not be as strange to Asian as other parts of the country but my private school consisted of only ten or less Korean students so it took a while for asian students to break out of the misconception. Based on my observation, this kind of racial misconceptions towards Asian seemed to be even stronger for males than females. Since not until recently, most foreign movies portray asian character as a skinny boy with big glasses and a tucked y-shirt. However, I believe that the streptype of Asian changed a lot within a couple years. Now that a lot of Korean students go to expensive private schools in America for education, foreigners image of weak Asian is vanishing year by year.
Ironically, I do judge people or race when I hate that happening to myself. I used to judge China and Chinese people a lot. I used to belive that they are dirty, loud, and very cheap. This misconception developed when I was going to middle school in the States. My Korean friends used to tease them and even had a name for Chinese, "Zzang-gae." Although, I never had any direct relationship or incidents with any of the Chinese friends at school, I just naturally got influenced and dissolved into the atmosphere.
Streotype has always played a detrimental role in my life: it was never beneficial in building relationship with new and different people. After tranfering to four different schools, I have met a lot of people. I used to hold myself back from a certain cliche because of the streotype people including myself had on them. However, for nine out of time times, it made it clear that those labels are not true. For example, there are some geeky and nerdy Asian out there but that does not mean that all of us are like that. As I mentioned eariler, I used to avoid Chinese people but I got to know this one very cool Chinese girl who proved me wrong and made me realize just how ill-minded and unfair it is to judge people without even trying to get to know them. I missed out on a lot of opportunities to get close to some very amazing people because I let myself believe to strongly for those general judgements. Thus, I really want to let other people know that everyone is different in their own ways. Now, I really do not have much streotyping habit left in me and it has been a lot easier to form relationship.

Global Warming on Discovery Channel

It is true that the internet is one of the most influential mass medias exists currently. In the process of updating the blog page regularly I discovered that the internet provides us almost all types of media: books, films, magazines, newspapers, TV, and so on. However, it is not only the worldwide mass media but also multi-combined mass media. It has a complex form of mass media that communicates with the internet users around the world. For example, the Discovery Channel which is one of the most popular TV networks provides scientific experiment and the potential risks through the website. The website presents the project related to the global warming and it has a game, book, eight different experiments, articles, and videos to inform the readers.

Since the Discovery Channel is a well-known TV network, the information presented through its website is mostly reliable. Introducing various sources, which might have caused the global warming, approaches different perspectives to avoid narrowing readers’ mind. However, most of the information related to the global warming is scientific results which are always debatable. Despite of controversial issue, the website is aiming to evaluate the causes and results of the global warming by dividing into different sections: signs, sources, and carbon cycles. Even though the Discovery Channel covers numerous different topics related to not only science but also other health and animal concerns, it strongly focuses on the global warming in the specific category of the website.

Stereotype Response: Jiwon Ha

What stereotypes do people have about you?

Not all people hold this particular stereotype about me, but since my other group members have already written every possible type of streotype (: bloodtype, ethnicity...), I am going to talk about the streotype I "gained" due to my appearance. Here in TCIS, teachers and students do not judge students or peers by how they dress or how they look, compared to Korean society. Ever since I've come to TCIS, I started to be more conscious about my appearance than when I attended Korean school. Also in my sophomore year, I pierced my ear. And recently I dyed my hair to light brown. These changes seem to bother nobody here in TCIS, however, it seems to bother everyone I know in Cheongju, where I live. When I pierced my ears, all my friends from middle school, which was Korean public school, were shocked by my "rebellious" action. I didn't make a big deal out of me piercing my ears for most girls in TCIS have thier ears pierced. But for my friends who go to Korean highschool in a small city, ear-piercing is rather taken as an extraordinary, rebellious action, which is only done by troublemakers. So I had to confront my close friends' condemnationm all of sudden only because I got a hole in my ear. When I dyed my hair, too, I was caught in similar situation. My grandparents were mad at me for dying my hair. They somehow concluded that I am not studying hard enough. These streotypes I suffered through are due to the culture differences between TCIS community, which is more Americanized, and Korean society, which is more conservative.

What stereotypes do you have about other people?

Although I've experienced same streotypes, I often judge others by their appearance. Whenever I see a person with five ear piercings on each ear or dyed bright yellow hair, I unconsciously make an assumption that the person must be a troublemaker. Of course, that is not true at all.

Another huge streotype I have about other people is the bloodtype. I sometimes get offended when other people make weird assumptions about me only because my bloodtype is A, but I also tended to make assumptions about others according to their bloodtype.

Moreover, I have a racist streotype which I know is wrong but just can't help it. When I was living in the States, I've met many mexicans who are very rude and noisy. I know there must be some nice mexicans as well, but I ended up having a bad stereotype about Mexicans. So, whenever I see something related to Mexico, I just think of it negative.

Are stereotypes beneficial or harmful? Why do you think this?

I think stereotypes are harmful in most cases, because they usually limit your thinking. With streotypes stuck in the back of your head, you just can't help making wrong assumptions and unfair judgments. Yet sometimes streotypes can be beneficial, too, when they are right.

Mass Media: Internet - Global Warming and the polar bears

As the issue of global warming expands throughout the world majority of people tend to consider only negative effects on humanity. They are oblivious of other environmental factor such as wild life animals. One of the most popularized topics is the relationship between the global warming and polar bears.

According to the website that I found, anonymous blogger elaborates on Al Gore’s statement: the polar bears are in danger. As the world’s average temperature increases, iceberg has already started to melt. Because icebergs are melting, the polar bears are losing their habitats or places to rest. Therefore, the number of drowning polar bears began to increases. Some argues against Al Gore that it does not matter for the polar bears to lose icebergs because they usually stay near the coast area. However, below the website one link provides various video clips about the global warming including the problems of drowning polar bears.

Stereotype - Joyce Ha

Stereotype is defined as the widely held conception or tradition towards certain type of culture or group of people. I am 18 years old Korean girl who attends international school in Korea. By looking at this simple description of myself a typical Korean society judges me with traditional stereotypes.

Most of the Korean adults have a strict mindset that “Korean high school students must wear uniforms and have short and neat hair cut.” If high school students or general teenagers are not wearing appropriate attire, adults think that they are either college students or naughty and misbehaving students in their school. Whenever I take a taxi in Daejeon to go to KTX station or to come back to the dormitory, taxi drivers most likely to ask me, “are you Hannam University student?” They all judge me by my appearance without thinking about other features. Because TCIS does not require students to wear uniforms, we all wear normal casual clothes which make us look like college students. I understand those biased views, but it is not right to just judge others by appearance and attires. Oftentimes misjudgment made by others towards me is annoying and even intimidating.

Another stereotype towards me is that I am a student who always excels in every class with excessively talented math skills. Because I am Korean, or Asian in wider view, a lot of people have a tendency to judge me as a nerd. Moreover, many people think that female students usually perform better than the male students do at school. Since I fit into both ethnicity and gender categories, I am considered as one of the smartest students at school. However, the reality is extremely different. Neither do I perform the best at school nor do I fail the courses. Moreover, I take IB Mathematics Studies SL which is the lowest math course provided by TCIS among IB classes. This proves that I am not the one who excels at math like majority of Korean students.

Interestingly, even though I don’t enjoy being judged by other people mainly based on their stereotype, I tend to judge and analyze others by my extremely biased and narrow mindset. Since such stereotypes are the fundamental knowledge when I meet somebody new, it can be useful in some sense. However, it is better to reduce those stereotypes towards others unless we truly understand and know others.

Impact of Global Warming (INTERNET)

Global warming is an ongoing world-wide issue that is extremely controversial. Many scientists are debating whether it is a myth or a serious problem. However, I heard about Tuvalu islands from a friend of mine who is currently taking biology. By searching “Tuvalu islands” in Google, I was able to find one article from “SPIEGEL ONLINE international” which is a German website.

The title of the article, Islander without an island: What will become of Tuvalu’s climate refugees?, introduces to the main topic of the article: the disappearing Pacific nation of Tuvalu. Due to the drastic climate change, which is caused by Global warming, Tuvalu islanders are not only losing their physical territories but also in danger of losing their nationality. Since general articles are supposed to be objective, this article is more informative and expository than personally biased. Therefore, Anwen Roberts, author of this article, informs the legal problems that are rising due to the gradual loss of virtual territory in Tuvalu in serious and sincere tone. When the author is demonstrating the serious and urgent consequences of global warming by presenting the evidence from Tuvalu, it convinces the reader that the global warming is not a myth. (Examples excerpted from the article) “Environmentalists have long worried about the fate of this tiny Pacific state. Now, however, international legal experts have also taken up the topic of its imminent demise. A nation's “territorial integrity” is one of the paramount legal principles. It’s unprecedented, however, for a country to completely lose its territory without the use of military force.”

To effectively state the arguments and evidences to persuade the readers about the reality of global warming the article is well-structured with the straightforward and concise dictions. It has title and sub-title with the introductory paragraph which eventually leads to the main focus of the article. “Uninhabitable”, “stateless”, and “territorial integrity” are the words that support the main idea clearly.

Mainly the article is arguing that the global warming should be stopped immediately due to the negative consequences impacted unfairly on Tuvaluans. They are living in such a tiny country that does not even interrupt the environmental pollution. While all the carbon dioxide emission and other toxic gases, which affect the global warming, have been creating by other big industrialized countries, innocent Tuvalu islanders were getting disadvantages.

Global Warming (Internet)

Newspaper is also available online. However, it is different from the paper-based newspaper because there is no limitation of sources in terms of dates. As we search keywords on the search engine, online website such as http://www.nytimes.com/ enables the internet users to search for news related to various different topics. Not only the official articles but also personal opinions or blogs such as “Tierney Lab” are available. It is created and written by John Tierney who always wanted to be a scientist but went into journalism. Now he creates the “Tierney Lab” blog which is located in Science Times section.

On February 29, 2008 John Tierney wrote about the controversial public view towards global warming. He combined both the authoritative researchers or universities’ statistics and his interpretation to conclude whether the global warming is a paradox. Unlike the video clip that I found on YouTube, his blog was mainly focused on why there are different mindsets among different group of people. The people who are more informed about global warming tend to feel less personal responsibility of potential risks than those who are not. At the end of his personal blog Tierney stated that the global warming causes risks, but at the same time some kind of solution will be discovered to minimize such risks in the future.

Through the internet, one of the most recent and broad mass media, not only scientific data and information can be gained but also personal thoughts and opinions are demonstrated. Because Tierney Lab is published and strictly censored by the New York Times, which is the worldwide newspaper, it provides reliable information.

"The Global Warming Runaway Train"
http://www.bclocalnews.com/okanagan_similkameen/keremeosreview/opinion/27168054.html
This article was published on August 19, 2008 in Keremeos Review. (According to WiKipedia, Keremeos is a village in southern central British Columbia, Canada.)

Unlike the previous article from The New York Times, this article from Keremeos Review poses a quite different attitude toward the global warming issue. It first denounces that the exaggerated concerns about the global issue are misused as a vote-getting tool. Then it protests that the whole global warming issue is too overstated. Those exaggeration makes people nervous and politicians come up with short-term envionment-friendly solutions that will work temporarily, but eventually be a total waste in long-run.

Personally, the article was somewhat new because I have hardly read any article opposing the seriousness and urgency of the global warming. I think there are some valid points made in the article; maybe the issue was too exaggerated. Yet I think this article is far more vulnerable to the bias than the previous article. Throughout the article, the author's voice is too powerful, opinionated, and subjective in a way, thus giving me an impression that the author is trying to persuade me in the article, rather than trying to convince me with strong evidences.

Also, the focus was too local to be believed by the general public. The article is very focused on British, Colombia; its example of the politicians using the global warming as a vote-booster is only based on the case of B.C.. Although the article is not entirely focused on B.C. -there is an example of the States at the end of the article and quotes from other sources-, the article surely seem to give priority to the local concern.

The bias and limit in this article is due to the newspaper company, I believe. Keremeos Review, unlike The New York Times, is a relatively unknown, small, local newspaper, and obviously put more stress on the local issues than the global issues. I'm not saying Keremeos Review neglects the global concerns; it is more focused on local interest. In fact, the author's arguments, although there is some limits, make sense, and although too aggressive, are quite reasonable.

The purpose of the article is to inform the local readers of the new environmental policies in B.C., and to point out some irrational exaggerations that drive people into confusion and illogic relating to the global warming. And I think the article is satisfactory enough to fulfill both purposes.

Another tv report on global warming

Global warming is affect our humanity and has already shown the massive effect. This television news has taken the reporter to the Greenland where the large glaciers are. The reporter states how the glacier is melting at fast pace, breaking and melting apart floating into the open water.
The reporter Jonathan Hunt's report is very objective, it shows a lot of factual aspects of glabal warming and its cause of climate change by presenting the large glacier as the background of which he is standing. Because the news shows the glacier of which global warming is affecting, the public can better acknowledge where our environment stands in terms of safety. The news is very credible and trust-worthy as of many other television news that provide strong visual effects and evidence.

Global warming reported on TV

To find out the credibility of TV reports and their contents, I went through many television channels' websites. I chose tv as a search tool because it provides both objective and subjective perspectives on a particular issue. CNN often reveals politicians who are debating over the topic of global warming that allows the audience or general public get a glimpse of each person's idea, enabling them to broaden their own point of view by examing two different ideas.
Since the theory of glabal warming has developed for many years and notified the peril of damaging our environment, the most recently updated news focus on the aspect of how people or a particular organization try to reduce th carbon dioxide emission. a videoclip from CNN shows how the U.N organization are enhancing the reduction of the carbon dioxide emission by lessening the use of air conditionings. The source is very trust-worthy because it supports their report with a visual evidence: the public gets to hear the interviews of the ambassadors who are enduring the heat for the sake of our environment.

"As Arctic Sea Ice Melts, Experts Expect New Low"
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/science/earth/28seaice.html?ref=science
This article appeared in print on August 28, 2008, on page A20 of the New York edition of The New York Times.

Newspaper, as the most impartial means of mass communication, does not allow a bias -or is not supposed to contain any bias. Yet it requires a long self-contemplation for a writer to set aside his/her bias when writing. For the readers, it's even worse, because they need to do one more job: not only trying to set aside their own bias while reading, but also straining to detect the writer's hidden bias in the article. Anyway, most writers prefer to write an article filled with quotes from other people, because the writers believe their articles would be objective enough if they included others' opinions in the articles (which is not always true, though).

This article, too, is quite neutral since the writer doesn't directly intervene in the issue but rather "reports" what scientists claim about the melting Arctic ice. Since the "Global Warming" itself is an issue that is limited to have any bias anyway (since everybody knows that the global warming is a bad thing), the only possible bias this article has is the bias of the writer in choosing the evidences- the quotes. In this article, the writer again and again quotes quite a few scientists and experts. These quotes surely help the article to earn more credibility, reliablity and professionality. However, based on what standard the writer has chosen those particular scientists in the article, we the readers don't know.

Yet the overall meaning of the article is very clear. It is world-widely acknowledged that Arctic ice is melting more and more due to the global warming. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to add some more evidences to this globally critical issue. Since most people do not realize the seriousness of the global warming, the article maybe is written to inform the negligent readers what's happening to the polar bears and melting ices in the Arctic at this moment.

This article made me re-realize about how serious the global warming issue is becoming. As I mentioned above, the article's usage of the quotes from a number of experts were efficient. I found the article very convincing because of the quotes; those quotes gave the article authority -the power.

Global Warming (Internet)

Our group chose a topic as global warming and I decided to cover this topic with the internet. Since internet includes almost every type of mass media, I tried to find the one that represents unique feature of internet: YouTube. YouTube is a website that enables any internet users to upload, view and share video clips. It provides plentiful videos on various different topics which are usually newly updated in every second or so. However, it sometimes contains unreliable sources or videos because a lot of users upload their personal videos that do not guarantee the credibility of information. Therefore, it is important to evaluate whether the video demonstrates the right and trustworthy information. A short video clip from YouTube illustrates how human beings are destroying the nature of the earth and increasing the greenhouse gas which is the main factor warms up the whole world. Since the video clip is originated from the National Geographic Channel, it has more credibility and reliability than personally recorded video clip has.

Internet influences me the most

I am currently attending TCIS which requires me to carry my laptop daily to school. Most of assignments are posted on-line and some of them have to be done on the website such as blogger or Moodle. Moreover, a lot of research papers are required for IB Diploma students, for example, extended essay and internal assessments. Therefore, the most frequently used or exposed mass media is internet.
Internet is a major tool that I always use to finish my work and enjoy my free time. Oftentimes I am depended on the internet which provides me with almost everything that I want to know, watch, have, or listen. Whenever I do my homework or research certain topic, I can see other advertisements, headline news, and other banners that I do not intend to see. Such unintended materials sometimes grab my attention and influence me.
Internet is the only mass media that allows people to receive up-to-date information. Therefore, it is easy to get new information quickly. Since internet gives a lot of advantageous privileges for me I use it frequently. These are the reasons that I am influenced by the internet the most.

Mass Media: Internet

Internet is a worldwide network that provides a wide variety of information and entertainment to everyone who has an access. It is the most recent form of mass media which enables the users to research, communicate, and get messages. There is no specific audience because anyone who has an electronic device that connects to internet can join this network. Although internet is considered one type of mass media, it consists of all other mass media such as magazine, newspaper, radio, TV, music, books, and film. There are certain websites that provide daily news and headlines, and some other types of mass media are available as downloadable file format. Because internet is ubiquitous and has plentiful sources, all the users are able to obtain something that they want to know or desire at any time. However, the reliability and credibility of sources are not guaranteed.

Mass Media: Radio

Radio is the wireless transmission: telegraphy or telephony that enables the broadcasting of speeches.

(been paraphrased, used sources as http://www.answers.com/topic/radio and http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/radio%20)

The audience of radio can be varied according to the purpose what they are seeking for in radio. General population has a lot of choices since radio provides music, issues (news), traffics (on-road situation), and advertisements. Radio's characteristics are first of all, it can give out regional information. Secondly, it is interactive, hence, more personal. Moreover, radio has day-long programs.

Jisun: type of media that influences me the most, Television

The type of media that has the most impact on my life is television. Television gets immensely absorbed into people’s minds and hearts by providing both visual and sound effects, hence, satisfying the needs that other media such as radio or newspaper cannot offer. However, personally, this vitality often creates negative influence. Television does present a lot of profanity and violence. Therefore, by watching TV, I often see myself change my values and personality around.
One of the biggest problems that I encountered by watching TV was that some of the TV shows from MTV and Vh1, generate an unhealthy image of female by promoting the audience to meet the media’s ideal body or face image and showing celebrities partying and doing drugs which some children would unfortunately idolize about. Although, it provides insightful information and news, especially for children and young adults, bad and shocking visuals tend to compel them. Thus, I believe that television influences me the most and all of us in the world, sadly and most likely in negative ways than positive ways.

Jiwon: The Type of Media that Influenced Me the Most

Mass media has had tremendous impacts on me throughout my entire life. TV has been my best friend ever since I was a baby, and the internet is indispensable element of my life now -just can't live without it!-. Yet the medium that influenced me the most is newspaper. I wasn't interested in newspaper at all until I had done the summer assignment for my fifth-grade social study class. I was supposed to scrap one interesting article each day and write my opinion/reflection on the article. For the whole summer, I read the newspaper everyday. Even after the summer, I've read newspaper every single day.
Newspaper, helped me to improve my reading ability, and to think critically. Not only that I've been able to keep up with all the current issues, but also I could relate myself to the world through the newspaper. Its impacts on me are so broad and significant that I can't describe them in a few words. My interest in newspaper continued even when I came to TCIS; I have worked as a staff writer and a cartoonist for school newspaper (Golden Dragon) for three years now. From my three years of experience, I've learned to be a responsible journalist. As I learned more and more about newspaper as a mass medium, I got more and more fascinated by its influence, responsibility, and significance. That's why I now pursue a career that will allow me to continue to work in newspaper industry.

Jisun's biography

My name is Ji Sun Na. I was born in Seoul, Korea in November, 28th of 1989. My family has the perfect foursome comprising of my parents, my older brother, and I. We lived in Los Angeles for seven years due to my father’s attendance in law school. Then, we moved back to Korea just in time for my elementary school entry. Since first grade, in full-scale, I engaged myself completely in art which prolonged until now.
After attending elementary school and Art middle school until 7th grade in Korea, I moved back, by myself, to the States. I graduated from a Catholic middle school in New Jersey. Then, the following year, I became a boarding student of Hun School of Princeton where I brother graduated from. The school’s strict and harsh academics made me realized how much I miss art schools which led me to transfer to Walnut Hill School in Massachusetts. I finished my freshmen and half of sophomore year there, committing me to art, then moved back to Korea and finally ended up at TCIS.
I finished half of sophomore and junior here at TCIS and now am a senior. I still pursue art as my future and career. Also, I am very excited for the journey to be embarked on for the rest of senior year.

Joyce's Biography

I was born in Glendale, California on March 3 1990. After a year later, my parents decided to move back to Korea. Since then I lived in Seoul until my last year of middle school. When I was half way done with the last year of middle school, in the summer of 2005, my family decided to send me to the States, and I started to attend Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tennessee from freshmen to sophomore year. While I was studying in the States my parents moved to Busan due to my father’s business. After two years of high school experience in Tennessee, I came back to Korea and transferred to TCIS in the beginning of my junior year. Now I am currently attending TCIS as a class of 2009 expecting to have a wonderful year!

Mass Media: Newspaper

A newspaper is a (often daily) periodical which can be widely distributed and circulated. It contains a journal of current news in a variety topics, including politics, crime, sports, weather, and entertainment.

A newspaper's number-one goal is to inform the mass what had happened everyday. The audience therefore is the general public, so a newspaper must not be esoteric but must be able to appeal to people of every class. A newspaper has been the primary source for the public to get informed, thus it plays a significant role in forming the mass opinion. Bearing this huge responsiblity, it is essential for a newspaper to be unbiased and objective.

Definition of Mass Media

Mass media is very simple and easy to define; it is any medium which allows the mass communication. A mass medium must be able to communicate a message of a person to a large group, and this process must happen simultaneously. Until now, mass media had been clearly defined as eight industries: books. newspapers, magazines, recordings, radip, movies, television, and the internet. Due to the rapid expansion of the digital technology, however, the boundary of mass media is getting difficult to determine recently. (For instance, cell phone or computer game industries satisfy the definition of mass media as well, so the controversy over whether those newly rising industries should be accepted as mass media is still on-going.)

hajiii profile!

I was born in Birmingham, AL. Sadly, I don't remember anything about my hometown because I came back to Korea when I was 4. I lived in Daejon for about 3 years and then moved to Cheongju because of my parents' job. Cheongju, a small city with nothing, is where I've spent most of life. I finished my elementary school there and then went to the States and lived in San Diego, CA for a year. (It was a beautiful city!) I came back to Cheongju then went to local middle school. After I graduated middle school, I chose to come to TCIS instead of local highschool, because I've wanted to go to college in the States.
I am really excited AND nervous to be a senior and just can't wait until all this college mess is over! haha :)
