Global Warming (Internet)

Newspaper is also available online. However, it is different from the paper-based newspaper because there is no limitation of sources in terms of dates. As we search keywords on the search engine, online website such as http://www.nytimes.com/ enables the internet users to search for news related to various different topics. Not only the official articles but also personal opinions or blogs such as “Tierney Lab” are available. It is created and written by John Tierney who always wanted to be a scientist but went into journalism. Now he creates the “Tierney Lab” blog which is located in Science Times section.

On February 29, 2008 John Tierney wrote about the controversial public view towards global warming. He combined both the authoritative researchers or universities’ statistics and his interpretation to conclude whether the global warming is a paradox. Unlike the video clip that I found on YouTube, his blog was mainly focused on why there are different mindsets among different group of people. The people who are more informed about global warming tend to feel less personal responsibility of potential risks than those who are not. At the end of his personal blog Tierney stated that the global warming causes risks, but at the same time some kind of solution will be discovered to minimize such risks in the future.

Through the internet, one of the most recent and broad mass media, not only scientific data and information can be gained but also personal thoughts and opinions are demonstrated. Because Tierney Lab is published and strictly censored by the New York Times, which is the worldwide newspaper, it provides reliable information.

"The Global Warming Runaway Train"
http://www.bclocalnews.com/okanagan_similkameen/keremeosreview/opinion/27168054.html
This article was published on August 19, 2008 in Keremeos Review. (According to WiKipedia, Keremeos is a village in southern central British Columbia, Canada.)

Unlike the previous article from The New York Times, this article from Keremeos Review poses a quite different attitude toward the global warming issue. It first denounces that the exaggerated concerns about the global issue are misused as a vote-getting tool. Then it protests that the whole global warming issue is too overstated. Those exaggeration makes people nervous and politicians come up with short-term envionment-friendly solutions that will work temporarily, but eventually be a total waste in long-run.

Personally, the article was somewhat new because I have hardly read any article opposing the seriousness and urgency of the global warming. I think there are some valid points made in the article; maybe the issue was too exaggerated. Yet I think this article is far more vulnerable to the bias than the previous article. Throughout the article, the author's voice is too powerful, opinionated, and subjective in a way, thus giving me an impression that the author is trying to persuade me in the article, rather than trying to convince me with strong evidences.

Also, the focus was too local to be believed by the general public. The article is very focused on British, Colombia; its example of the politicians using the global warming as a vote-booster is only based on the case of B.C.. Although the article is not entirely focused on B.C. -there is an example of the States at the end of the article and quotes from other sources-, the article surely seem to give priority to the local concern.

The bias and limit in this article is due to the newspaper company, I believe. Keremeos Review, unlike The New York Times, is a relatively unknown, small, local newspaper, and obviously put more stress on the local issues than the global issues. I'm not saying Keremeos Review neglects the global concerns; it is more focused on local interest. In fact, the author's arguments, although there is some limits, make sense, and although too aggressive, are quite reasonable.

The purpose of the article is to inform the local readers of the new environmental policies in B.C., and to point out some irrational exaggerations that drive people into confusion and illogic relating to the global warming. And I think the article is satisfactory enough to fulfill both purposes.

Another tv report on global warming

Global warming is affect our humanity and has already shown the massive effect. This television news has taken the reporter to the Greenland where the large glaciers are. The reporter states how the glacier is melting at fast pace, breaking and melting apart floating into the open water.
The reporter Jonathan Hunt's report is very objective, it shows a lot of factual aspects of glabal warming and its cause of climate change by presenting the large glacier as the background of which he is standing. Because the news shows the glacier of which global warming is affecting, the public can better acknowledge where our environment stands in terms of safety. The news is very credible and trust-worthy as of many other television news that provide strong visual effects and evidence.

Global warming reported on TV

To find out the credibility of TV reports and their contents, I went through many television channels' websites. I chose tv as a search tool because it provides both objective and subjective perspectives on a particular issue. CNN often reveals politicians who are debating over the topic of global warming that allows the audience or general public get a glimpse of each person's idea, enabling them to broaden their own point of view by examing two different ideas.
Since the theory of glabal warming has developed for many years and notified the peril of damaging our environment, the most recently updated news focus on the aspect of how people or a particular organization try to reduce th carbon dioxide emission. a videoclip from CNN shows how the U.N organization are enhancing the reduction of the carbon dioxide emission by lessening the use of air conditionings. The source is very trust-worthy because it supports their report with a visual evidence: the public gets to hear the interviews of the ambassadors who are enduring the heat for the sake of our environment.

"As Arctic Sea Ice Melts, Experts Expect New Low"
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/28/science/earth/28seaice.html?ref=science
This article appeared in print on August 28, 2008, on page A20 of the New York edition of The New York Times.

Newspaper, as the most impartial means of mass communication, does not allow a bias -or is not supposed to contain any bias. Yet it requires a long self-contemplation for a writer to set aside his/her bias when writing. For the readers, it's even worse, because they need to do one more job: not only trying to set aside their own bias while reading, but also straining to detect the writer's hidden bias in the article. Anyway, most writers prefer to write an article filled with quotes from other people, because the writers believe their articles would be objective enough if they included others' opinions in the articles (which is not always true, though).

This article, too, is quite neutral since the writer doesn't directly intervene in the issue but rather "reports" what scientists claim about the melting Arctic ice. Since the "Global Warming" itself is an issue that is limited to have any bias anyway (since everybody knows that the global warming is a bad thing), the only possible bias this article has is the bias of the writer in choosing the evidences- the quotes. In this article, the writer again and again quotes quite a few scientists and experts. These quotes surely help the article to earn more credibility, reliablity and professionality. However, based on what standard the writer has chosen those particular scientists in the article, we the readers don't know.

Yet the overall meaning of the article is very clear. It is world-widely acknowledged that Arctic ice is melting more and more due to the global warming. The purpose of this article, therefore, is to add some more evidences to this globally critical issue. Since most people do not realize the seriousness of the global warming, the article maybe is written to inform the negligent readers what's happening to the polar bears and melting ices in the Arctic at this moment.

This article made me re-realize about how serious the global warming issue is becoming. As I mentioned above, the article's usage of the quotes from a number of experts were efficient. I found the article very convincing because of the quotes; those quotes gave the article authority -the power.

Global Warming (Internet)

Our group chose a topic as global warming and I decided to cover this topic with the internet. Since internet includes almost every type of mass media, I tried to find the one that represents unique feature of internet: YouTube. YouTube is a website that enables any internet users to upload, view and share video clips. It provides plentiful videos on various different topics which are usually newly updated in every second or so. However, it sometimes contains unreliable sources or videos because a lot of users upload their personal videos that do not guarantee the credibility of information. Therefore, it is important to evaluate whether the video demonstrates the right and trustworthy information. A short video clip from YouTube illustrates how human beings are destroying the nature of the earth and increasing the greenhouse gas which is the main factor warms up the whole world. Since the video clip is originated from the National Geographic Channel, it has more credibility and reliability than personally recorded video clip has.

Internet influences me the most

I am currently attending TCIS which requires me to carry my laptop daily to school. Most of assignments are posted on-line and some of them have to be done on the website such as blogger or Moodle. Moreover, a lot of research papers are required for IB Diploma students, for example, extended essay and internal assessments. Therefore, the most frequently used or exposed mass media is internet.
Internet is a major tool that I always use to finish my work and enjoy my free time. Oftentimes I am depended on the internet which provides me with almost everything that I want to know, watch, have, or listen. Whenever I do my homework or research certain topic, I can see other advertisements, headline news, and other banners that I do not intend to see. Such unintended materials sometimes grab my attention and influence me.
Internet is the only mass media that allows people to receive up-to-date information. Therefore, it is easy to get new information quickly. Since internet gives a lot of advantageous privileges for me I use it frequently. These are the reasons that I am influenced by the internet the most.

Mass Media: Internet

Internet is a worldwide network that provides a wide variety of information and entertainment to everyone who has an access. It is the most recent form of mass media which enables the users to research, communicate, and get messages. There is no specific audience because anyone who has an electronic device that connects to internet can join this network. Although internet is considered one type of mass media, it consists of all other mass media such as magazine, newspaper, radio, TV, music, books, and film. There are certain websites that provide daily news and headlines, and some other types of mass media are available as downloadable file format. Because internet is ubiquitous and has plentiful sources, all the users are able to obtain something that they want to know or desire at any time. However, the reliability and credibility of sources are not guaranteed.

Mass Media: Radio

Radio is the wireless transmission: telegraphy or telephony that enables the broadcasting of speeches.

(been paraphrased, used sources as http://www.answers.com/topic/radio and http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/radio%20)

The audience of radio can be varied according to the purpose what they are seeking for in radio. General population has a lot of choices since radio provides music, issues (news), traffics (on-road situation), and advertisements. Radio's characteristics are first of all, it can give out regional information. Secondly, it is interactive, hence, more personal. Moreover, radio has day-long programs.

Jisun: type of media that influences me the most, Television

The type of media that has the most impact on my life is television. Television gets immensely absorbed into people’s minds and hearts by providing both visual and sound effects, hence, satisfying the needs that other media such as radio or newspaper cannot offer. However, personally, this vitality often creates negative influence. Television does present a lot of profanity and violence. Therefore, by watching TV, I often see myself change my values and personality around.
One of the biggest problems that I encountered by watching TV was that some of the TV shows from MTV and Vh1, generate an unhealthy image of female by promoting the audience to meet the media’s ideal body or face image and showing celebrities partying and doing drugs which some children would unfortunately idolize about. Although, it provides insightful information and news, especially for children and young adults, bad and shocking visuals tend to compel them. Thus, I believe that television influences me the most and all of us in the world, sadly and most likely in negative ways than positive ways.

Jiwon: The Type of Media that Influenced Me the Most

Mass media has had tremendous impacts on me throughout my entire life. TV has been my best friend ever since I was a baby, and the internet is indispensable element of my life now -just can't live without it!-. Yet the medium that influenced me the most is newspaper. I wasn't interested in newspaper at all until I had done the summer assignment for my fifth-grade social study class. I was supposed to scrap one interesting article each day and write my opinion/reflection on the article. For the whole summer, I read the newspaper everyday. Even after the summer, I've read newspaper every single day.
Newspaper, helped me to improve my reading ability, and to think critically. Not only that I've been able to keep up with all the current issues, but also I could relate myself to the world through the newspaper. Its impacts on me are so broad and significant that I can't describe them in a few words. My interest in newspaper continued even when I came to TCIS; I have worked as a staff writer and a cartoonist for school newspaper (Golden Dragon) for three years now. From my three years of experience, I've learned to be a responsible journalist. As I learned more and more about newspaper as a mass medium, I got more and more fascinated by its influence, responsibility, and significance. That's why I now pursue a career that will allow me to continue to work in newspaper industry.

Jisun's biography

My name is Ji Sun Na. I was born in Seoul, Korea in November, 28th of 1989. My family has the perfect foursome comprising of my parents, my older brother, and I. We lived in Los Angeles for seven years due to my father’s attendance in law school. Then, we moved back to Korea just in time for my elementary school entry. Since first grade, in full-scale, I engaged myself completely in art which prolonged until now.
After attending elementary school and Art middle school until 7th grade in Korea, I moved back, by myself, to the States. I graduated from a Catholic middle school in New Jersey. Then, the following year, I became a boarding student of Hun School of Princeton where I brother graduated from. The school’s strict and harsh academics made me realized how much I miss art schools which led me to transfer to Walnut Hill School in Massachusetts. I finished my freshmen and half of sophomore year there, committing me to art, then moved back to Korea and finally ended up at TCIS.
I finished half of sophomore and junior here at TCIS and now am a senior. I still pursue art as my future and career. Also, I am very excited for the journey to be embarked on for the rest of senior year.

Joyce's Biography

I was born in Glendale, California on March 3 1990. After a year later, my parents decided to move back to Korea. Since then I lived in Seoul until my last year of middle school. When I was half way done with the last year of middle school, in the summer of 2005, my family decided to send me to the States, and I started to attend Northeast High School in Clarksville, Tennessee from freshmen to sophomore year. While I was studying in the States my parents moved to Busan due to my father’s business. After two years of high school experience in Tennessee, I came back to Korea and transferred to TCIS in the beginning of my junior year. Now I am currently attending TCIS as a class of 2009 expecting to have a wonderful year!

Mass Media: Newspaper

A newspaper is a (often daily) periodical which can be widely distributed and circulated. It contains a journal of current news in a variety topics, including politics, crime, sports, weather, and entertainment.

A newspaper's number-one goal is to inform the mass what had happened everyday. The audience therefore is the general public, so a newspaper must not be esoteric but must be able to appeal to people of every class. A newspaper has been the primary source for the public to get informed, thus it plays a significant role in forming the mass opinion. Bearing this huge responsiblity, it is essential for a newspaper to be unbiased and objective.

Definition of Mass Media

Mass media is very simple and easy to define; it is any medium which allows the mass communication. A mass medium must be able to communicate a message of a person to a large group, and this process must happen simultaneously. Until now, mass media had been clearly defined as eight industries: books. newspapers, magazines, recordings, radip, movies, television, and the internet. Due to the rapid expansion of the digital technology, however, the boundary of mass media is getting difficult to determine recently. (For instance, cell phone or computer game industries satisfy the definition of mass media as well, so the controversy over whether those newly rising industries should be accepted as mass media is still on-going.)

hajiii profile!

I was born in Birmingham, AL. Sadly, I don't remember anything about my hometown because I came back to Korea when I was 4. I lived in Daejon for about 3 years and then moved to Cheongju because of my parents' job. Cheongju, a small city with nothing, is where I've spent most of life. I finished my elementary school there and then went to the States and lived in San Diego, CA for a year. (It was a beautiful city!) I came back to Cheongju then went to local middle school. After I graduated middle school, I chose to come to TCIS instead of local highschool, because I've wanted to go to college in the States.
I am really excited AND nervous to be a senior and just can't wait until all this college mess is over! haha :)
